Speed and benchmarks
- What is a good typing speed?
- For everyday use 40 to 50 WPM is typical, 50 to 80 is good, and 80 and above is fast. Professionals aim for 60 or more with 97% accuracy or better.
- What is the average typing speed?
- Most adults type around 40 WPM. Published figures range from 38 to 55 WPM depending on the test length and the population measured.
- What is the average typing speed by age?
- Children aged 7 to 10 type 10 to 25 WPM, teens 30 to 50, adults 18 to 30 about 40 to 65, and adults over 50 about 35 to 55. Practice matters far more than age.
- How is WPM calculated?
- WPM equals characters typed divided by five, divided by minutes, because a standard word is five characters including spaces. Net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors per minute.
- What is the difference between gross and net WPM?
- Gross WPM counts every word typed. Net WPM subtracts one word per uncorrected error, which is what most tests and exams report.
- Is 40 WPM good for a job?
- Yes. 40 WPM meets the US federal clerical standard and most entry-level admin roles; data entry and transcription often ask for 50 to 70 WPM.
- Is 60 WPM good?
- Yes. 60 WPM is well above average and comfortably meets most office, support and data entry requirements.
- Is 100 WPM fast?
- Yes. Only the top few percent of typists sustain 100 WPM; it is typical only for competitive or professional typists.
Accuracy and technique
- How is typing accuracy calculated?
- Accuracy is correct keystrokes divided by total keystrokes, times 100. Corrected errors still count against accuracy, but a corrected word does not reduce net WPM.
- What accuracy should I aim for?
- 97% or higher. Below 95%, time spent correcting usually cancels any speed gain.
- How long does it take to learn touch typing?
- Most adults reach 40 WPM in 4 to 8 weeks with 15 to 20 minutes of daily practice; children take longer.
- How can I increase my typing speed?
- Practise daily, put accuracy first, read ahead of the caret, drill your weakest keys from the dashboard, and test with the same length consistently.
- Why does my typing speed plateau?
- The usual causes are looking at the keyboard, using the wrong fingers, never reviewing errors, and practising only short bursts.
- What is touch typing?
- Typing with all ten fingers from the home row without looking at the keyboard.
- What is the home row?
- The middle row of letter keys (A S D F and J K L ;) where your fingers rest. F and J have bumps so you can find them by touch.
- Which test length should I use?
- One-minute tests are good for daily tracking; three- to five-minute tests reflect real work and match what exams and employers use.
- Does the text affect my WPM?
- Yes. Common-word tests score higher than quotes with punctuation and capitals, so compare results only within the same mode.
- What are keystrokes per hour (KPH)?
- A data entry measure. KPH is roughly WPM times 300, so 10,000 KPH is about 33 WPM and 18,000 KPH about 60 WPM.
Exams
- What typing speed is required for SSC CHSL?
- 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi over 10 minutes, with category-wise error limits. Always check the current notification.
- What typing speed is required for SSC CGL DEST?
- About 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes, roughly 27 WPM, for the Data Entry Skill Test.
- What is the typing speed for RRB NTPC?
- 30 WPM in English or 25 WPM in Hindi on a computer, with backspace disabled, for typist posts.
- What typing speed do US government jobs require?
- Typically 40 WPM with no more than three errors on a five-minute test; some county clerk roles accept 35 WPM.
- Mangal or Kruti Dev: which should I learn for Hindi exams?
- Mangal (Unicode) with the Inscript layout is the default for central exams such as CPCT; Kruti Dev or Remington GAIL only where the notification allows it.
- What is the difference between Inscript and Remington GAIL?
- Both type Mangal Unicode, but Inscript is the BIS standard layout while Remington GAIL copies the old Hindi typewriter arrangement.
Devices and keyboards
- Is typing speed on a phone counted the same way?
- Yes, WPM uses the same formula, but thumb typing averages 30 to 40 WPM and is not comparable to keyboard results.
- Does a mechanical keyboard make you type faster?
- Not by itself. It can improve comfort and consistency, and some people gain a few WPM from clearer feedback.
- Which keyboard switch is best for typing?
- Tactile switches are the usual recommendation; linear for a quiet smooth feel; clicky if noise is not a problem.
- Should I learn Dvorak or Colemak?
- Only if you are curious. The speed gains are small and the switching cost is weeks of slower typing. You can emulate both layouts here.
Health
- How do I avoid wrist pain while typing?
- Keep wrists neutral, elbows near 90 degrees, use a light touch, avoid resting wrists while typing, and take breaks every 30 to 60 minutes.
- Can typing cause carpal tunnel?
- Typing with poor posture for long hours is a risk factor; it is not the sole cause, and early tingling should be checked by a professional.
Kids
- What age should kids learn to type?
- Formal lessons work from about age 7 or 8 once hand span and letter recognition are ready; games can start earlier.
- What is a good typing speed for a 12-year-old?
- Around 20 to 35 WPM; 40 and above is excellent for that age.
Programmers
- What is a good typing speed for programmers?
- 50 to 70 WPM is plenty; symbol accuracy matters more than raw speed.
- Is typing speed important for programming?
- Modestly. It reduces friction and keeps you in flow, but thinking time dominates.
This site
- How do I get a typing certificate?
- Complete a timed test of three minutes or longer at 95% accuracy or better while signed in. Certificates are tiered from bronze (30 WPM) to diamond (100 WPM) and have a public verification link.
- How is the typing test scored on this site?
- Net WPM (five-character words minus uncorrected errors), raw WPM, accuracy and consistency, with per-key, per-finger and per-bigram stats saved to your dashboard.
- Is this typing test free?
- Yes. All tests, exam practice, lessons and games are free. An account only adds progress tracking, certificates, challenges and leaderboards.
- Why is my WPM different on different websites?
- Different word lists, test lengths, error rules, and whether corrected errors count all change the number.
- Does backspacing lower my score?
- Corrections cost time and lower raw accuracy, but a corrected word does not count as an error in net WPM.
- How often should I practise typing?
- 15 to 20 minutes a day beats one long weekly session; consistency drives muscle memory.
- How do the daily and weekly challenges work?
- Every day and every week an AI-written passage opens for everyone. Signed-in subscribers type it as often as they like; the best run counts and the leaderboard is published when the window closes.
- Which exams are covered?
- Over 100 exam pages across India, the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria and the Philippines, each with 120 practice tests in the real format.
